Miracle Match Half

First race of 2013 with a new focus. 1st of all I started working out at Intensity Training System 2 weeks ago and I have cleaned up my diet. I've worked hard and lost 12 pounds so far on the plan and feel really good. Wasn't sure how this change would effect my race but was looking forward to seeing how it went. If you've never run Waco it's got some serious hills between miles 6 and 11, and they hit me hard. I was hoping to get in the 1:40's for this race but ended up finishing in 1:51:44, which was good enough for 34th place out of about 330 runners. I was pleased with the effort I put in and figured the hills will only make me stronger for the next one. Will be running the Cowtown Half in about 4 weeks so I'll continue my Intensity Training, losing some more fat and see how the dice fall on race day!

New Watch, New Year!

Well I went through the motions in the second half of the year. I ran, but with not much commitment to anything but to enjoy myself. The long runs were few and far between and speed work didn't happen at all. Starting off 2013 with a new Nike watch and a new attitude.

Just to catch everyone up though, I did run UltraCentric again this year a way able to get in 78 miles while I was out there in November and then ran one of the Texas Whiners Double with Marla for her first official marathon.

El Scorcho Sin Lun6

This is my 4th year to run at El Scorcho, but my 1st to run the 25k. This was my first ultra back in 07 and it has become quite the party and the place to be for a midnight run on the Trinity trails in late July.
It was still a difficult night/morning for both Marla and myself as we didn't train as much as we would have like to but we trudged through the night to get finished, because it is all about getting the medal. Once finished we had a few beers and cheered on the 50k runners that were still out on the course.
We both had a great time and will back again next year to improve on our times and enjoy the party for another year.
Summer will be coming to a close in the next month or so, so it's time to start planning our fall schedule, and we both go some big plans! Looking forward to the fall running!

I'm Back!!!!

Ok, it's been a while since my last post but I needed to get away for a little while and see what the future held for me. I ran the RNR Dallas half marathon back in March and had a good race (1:45) especially with the lack of speed work I've done in the past few years. My last 2 races got me to thinking about what the future held for me; should I start working more on speed and shorter races up to marathon distances or continue the slow ultra running I'd been doing for the last couple of years. One thing I came to realize in the past few months is that my left knee get angry with me at a certain pace and it makes the decision to go slower so much easier. I have found that the treadmill helps me get better speed work in with out the pain, so I will continue to mix those workouts in every once in a while, but I think I've come to realize that slower and longer is more fun for me. There won't be anymore 100 milers in the future, but I'll be getting out on the trails and doing some more fixed time events in the future. My next races will be El Scorcho 25k and Cedar Ridge 36k in July, so it's time to get back to training.

Cowtown Marathon

Today I ran my second fastest marathon ever. It was a real struggle the last few miles as I was fighting off cramps in my right hamstring. My time was 3:49:21 which I'm super proud of because I've run very little in the last three weeks since I DNFd at Rocky Raccoon 100 at mile 56 with leg problems.

I'm also proud of Marla as she finished her first half marathon and only started training a couple of months ago. She had a great time and is already looking for a date for her second attempt and setting a PR. I think she's hooked now.

As for me I need to heal up so I'll probably spend some time on the bike for a few weeks and stay off the roads. I've got a few months until the Big D marathon which will probably be my next race.

A First Run

Tomorrow I'll be running the Cowtown marathon and it will be my first. I've run the ultra the last few years and have run the half as well but this year my lovely wife Marla is running her very first half marathon. She's been training for a few months but very few people even know she is running. I'm looking forward to seeing how much she enjoys it as she is already planning future races. Tomorrow we will have finishers pics so come on back.

New Blog, New Ink, New Direction

Lots of new going on around here.  My wife just redid my blog, I got some new ink (the flames) and I have a new direction in running.  I'm looking to find the fire and speed that I've neglected over the past few years while trying to finish a &^*%$# 100 mile race. Next up, the Cowtown Marathon, I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do there.
