I participated in my first duathlon in over 18 months and was able to bring home some hardware as I finished first in the clydesdale division. I guess it pays to have put on a few pounds this year. I weighed in at 216, with my dress clothes on, which is about 30 more than when I last did a duathlon. I rode my bike last weekend because I hadn't been out on the roads at all this whole year, but I was still able to put a good race together anyway. The duathlon was a 2 mile run, 16 mile bike and then another 2 mile run. With the calf problems I had been having I was worried about the running part but it actually went much better than I was expecting, except that I have lost every little bit of speed I ever had. I was realy surprised by the bike as I was able to average over 20mph and stay in the aero position for a good 80% of the race.
Today I'm not nearly as sore as I thought I would be and my calves and feet feel really good. I'm hoping to get some good recovery workouts in this week and possibly do the White Rock marathon in December.

Congratulations Derek - great race.
Look at you! Good job...
Congrats, way to compete! Get over to the track once a week and do some 800m repeats and you should see some of that speed come back.
